Cafe Boulud

May 23, 2016

Recently renovated Cafe Boulud inside the Four Seasons Hotel, Yorkville, Toronto. Love the retro/vintage decor. The dessert was the best part of the meal! (side note: they charge for hot water)

Cod Croquettes ~ hot and fresh with flaky fish filling

Half Rotisserie Chicken, pomme frites, watercress, sherry vinaigrette / Drink: Elderflower cocktail

Love the cute bread basket~ Chicken is ok (crispy skin and moist, a bit bland) but the star for me is the watercress - love the dressing and the crispy onions. The shoestring fries are highy addictive. Cocktail was berry-sweet and refreshing.

8 oz. Flat Iron Steak Frites

Cooked to medium rare, steak is super tender and soft. I find that this type of steak (Cumbrae?) is the soft kind without much texture/beef flavour vs. striploin/sirloin.

Parisan Steak Tartare, pickled condiments
Beef is diced rather than finely minced for a greater mouth feel. Fresh taste paired with the lettuce.  I guess the French take on this is thicker cut and pickled condiments vs. Italian style uses olive oil and parmeasan?

Île Flottane ~ floating island
Steamed meringue with maple sugar creme anglaise - this is my mom's favorite. Literally tastes like whipped egg whites, like a bite of soft, light cloud.

Grapefruit Givre ~ sesame halva, rose loukoum, grapefruit sorbet
I ordered this mainly for the artistic and prepartion effort. The chef scoops out the flesh of the grapefruit and freezes the shell, then fills it back with grapefruit sorbet, some cream and cookie crumbs, topped with cotton candy. This is probably the most creative/interesting dessert I've had (the other at Bosk, Shangri-la)

Total for 1 appetizer, 3 mains, 3 desserts and 2 drinks came to $200. Nice to treat yourself to a long lunch and nice ambience once in a while.
