Hong Kong Food Diary: Winter 2015

February 22, 2015

Local staple: Tai Po Hui Cooked Foods Market
Didn't get my Tak Cheong but this fish ball noodle was good - with fish ball, fish slice and fish skin.
Fresh minced beef congee ; Fresh and hot 油炸鬼 [Chinese breadstick/dough fritter]
Condensed milk toast ; 肠粉 [Rice noodle roll]
Really some of the best authentic food in wet markets if you don't mind the tight seating.

Jenn's Wan Chai/CWB Dessert Tour Stop #1: Oddie's Foodies
We shared a chocolate chip eggettes and Dr. Oddie ($52 HKD) - Italian low fat soft gelato served with chrysanthemum poached pears, gingery oat crumbs, honey ginger ice cream, honey jelly, butter crumbs, citrus caramel sauce, sprinkled with raspberry crisp

So many different flavors & textures - would be nice if they had a sit-down area to enjoy but this place is just a tiny grab-and-go store. I liked the ice cream and poached pears.

Jenn's Wan Chai/CWB Dessert Tour Stop #2: Lab Made (Tai Hang location)
We then walked from Oddie's to Lab Made - the famous nitrogen icecream. Again, mad expensive and just for looks ($44 HKD)  Bill got Gingerbread (Eggnog flavor) and my sister and I shared the Snowman (Greek yogurt flavor)

Tsim Chai Kee (沾仔记)
Must have wonton noodles in HK but we did not like this place despite it being famous. The pork inside the wontons tasted "霉", not bouncy shrimp. I think Mak's right beside this place is better, or Wonton Chai in Toronto.

Australia Dairy Company (澳洲牛奶公司)
A must-visit every time, can't get sick of their thick butter toast!!

Teakha
I love their whole lifestyle sustainability concept but maybe I'm just not hipster enough for it (or not in the relaxing mood that day). $42~ for the green tea cheesecake. There is minimal service element and cramped seating in the main area, but they do have a whole back room with a large table (where we sat), an upstairs area, and some wood logs & stumps as there is a policy of not having furniture outdoors.

Hotpot at 小肥牛 (Wan Chai)
Not AYCE style so not as much variety, but we did have some good food unavailable in Toronto - fish, beef ribs.

Cafe de Coral (大家樂)
大家樂都影?! 今次食得最多就是大家樂. Whether breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, we tried it all and honestly it is the cheapest and also consistent taste. I don't like macaroni but this tomato oxtail soup was not bad. The curry pork cutlet and hotpot dinner was not bad as well.

Steamed Egg White & Bird's Nest in Coconut (椰皇蛋白燉燕窩)
I love things in coconuts!! First had a egg white & milk version and then had it at dim sum, but this time with bird's nest in it too. Yum :) The 馬拉糕 at this Tai Po place was good too.

This time I can't really recall anything *wow* that we ate. Had some good local food but nothing mindblowing, and didn't even eat seafood feast this time. But sometimes the best meals are simple homemade meals, like Auntie H's oatmeal & purple potato and toast with homemade berry jam, as well as Grandma's soup, and fresh roasted chestnuts on the street! Those are what I miss most.
